How Hope Ek A.S.H.A. Was formed

Dr. Sushma Chawla’s (Founder President) mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1996. The disease was diagnosed in the second stage. It didn’t come alone; it also brought a lot of stress, anxiety and abundant responsibilities for Dr. Chawla, a medical practitioner. With all her medical expertise she was taking care of her mother while the irreversible disease progressed into the last stage. From a daughter, she became an efficient and devoted caregiver.

Finally, the imminent eventuality stared at her face one day. Dr.Chawla’s mother left for heavenly abode leaving behind the trauma of pain and the agony that this disease wreaked on the family members. Her mother’s name was Asha and after her loss, Dr. Chawla decided that she would help caregivers wherever she can with her experience and will not let them live without the hope that there is life with Alzheimer’s. This is how Hope Ek A.S.H.A. was formed on the premise that Dementia does not mean life comes to a standstill for senior citizens; rather it is something that can be managed with patience and the right kind of care.

Our Journey So Far

Admiration is often described as a human emotion elicited by people of competency, talent and skills exceeding common standards. Our journey so far has been pioneered by our highly esteemed and revered founder President is a gem of an individual who possesses all these traits and more, Dr. Sushma Chawla. Dr. Chawla’s mother was diagnosed with second stage Alzheimer’s in the year 1996. This in-turn and as expected brought about tremendous and unprecedented stress to Dr. Chalwa who was a medical practitioner at that time. So, from an early age she had undergone this unsurpassable transformation from a kind and loving daughter to a dedicated, committed & passionate caregiver. As the days moved ahead Dr. Chalwa’s mother Asha’s health deteriorated significantly until eventually the time had come to bid her a final farewell. Suffering the insurmountable loss of her beloved mother Dr. Chawla pledged to dedicate the rest of her life towards patients who suffer from dementia thus forming the juggernaut of a community we see today EK A.S.H.A. serving as a bright beacon of hope towards anyone suffering from dementia and their loved ones.
